Situated northwest of Los Angeles on the Californian coast, Ventura is surrounded by a narrow valley with steep terrain on either side, where the Ventura River flows through the western part of the city. The northern part of the town is bordered by the steep foothills of Ventura. A large portion of the eastern part of the city is located on a flat alluvial coastal plain that runs along the western edge of the Oxnard Plain. From the slopes to the Santa Clara River, which serves as the city's southern limit, several Barrancas extend. At the beginning of the Santa Clara River Valley, the city reaches Saticoy, a historic settlement.
The Chumash Native Indians and other groups have resided in Ventura for over 10,000 years. The city's name derives from the Mission San Buenaventura, which Junipero Serra established in 1782 after the arrival of Spanish missionaries. San Buenaventura was given to Don Jose de Arnaz as Rancho Ex-Mission San Buenaventura during the Mexican secularization of the Californian missions, and a small settlement began to form there. San Buenaventura became a city in 1866 following the American invasion of California. Ventura underwent significant development and expansion as a result of the huge oil boom of the 1920s and the subsequent post-World War II economic expansion.
