Salt Lake City (SLC) is the largest city and capital of Utah, USA. It is commonly referred to as Salt Lake and is situated in Salt Lake County, which is the most populous county in Utah. In 2020, the city had a population of 200,133 inhabitants and was the focal point of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which had 1,257,936 residents at the same time. Furthermore, Salt Lake City is part of the larger Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo Combined Statistical Area, which covers a 120-mile stretch of the Wasatch Front and is projected to have a population of 2,746,164 people in 2021.
Seeking refuge from persecution in their eastern homes, pioneer immigrants were led by Brigham Young to establish Salt Lake City on July 24, 1847. Upon arrival, the Mormons settled in a semi-arid valley and quickly built a vast irrigation system to cater to the burgeoning population. The city's grid follows a standard compass pattern, with the Salt Lake meridian situated at the southeast corner of Temple Square, the epicenter of the city that hosts the Salt Lake Temple. Its proximity to the Great Salt Lake led to the city being initially called Great Salt Lake City.
