The history of Fort Myers dates back to 1850 when it was named after Colonel Abraham Myers, who served in the United States Army for several years. The city was named after a local fort built during the Seminole Wars. Myers held various positions in the Quartermaster Department from 1833-1861 and later served as the quartermaster general of the Confederate States Army from 1861-1864.
Today, Fort Myers serves as a critical gateway to the Southwest Florida region and a well-known tourist destination in Florida. It is renowned for its favorable climate, scenic beaches, and abundant attractions. Visitors should not miss the city's major landmarks, such as the winter residences of Thomas Edison ("Seminole Lodge") and Henry Ford ("The Mangoes").
